RG4001: Documentation fences must have a valid classification๐Ÿ”—

 • Category Documentation
 • Scope documentation fence
 • Subreason fence-structure

A Markdown file in the checked documentation tree has a malformed Lean fence classification: an orphan, misplaced, duplicated or misspelled marker, an invalid expected-error pattern, or an unclosed fence. Or it has a line that can show Lean code at a place that the audit does not check: a Lean fence in a quotation or a list item, after indentation, inside another fence or with a different spelling of the language, or the start tag of a raw HTML code element.

What to do. Put each marker immediately before the lean fence it classifies, with a valid pattern, and close every fence. Write each Lean example as a lean fence that opens and closes in the first column, outside quotations, list items and other fences.

Requirement
Each lean-fail or lean-trusted-compiler marker sits immediately before its lean fence, every fence is closed, and Lean code is shown only as a lean fence in the first column.

Example.md:7: marker is not immediately adjacent to a ```lean fence

Correction

Change to docs/Example.md
 โ‹ฏ 3 unchanged lines
Reflexivity for every natural number. -/
 theorem reflexive (n : Nat) : n = n := rfl

The correction removes the orphan marker; the positive reflexivity fence is unchanged.

Checked by a documentation fence audit of <example>/docs: violating run rejected, corrected run completed.

How to fix it๐Ÿ”—

 1. Move the marker so no blank line or other content separates it from its fence; delete an orphan marker, or add the fence it was meant to classify.

 2. Use the exact marker spelling; write non-Lean sketches with another fence language.

 3. Move a Lean fence out of a quotation, a list item or another fence, remove the indentation before its opening run and its closing run, and write the language as lean, not Lean, lean4 or {.lean}.

 4. Show a raw HTML code tag with a character reference (<pre>) or name it in prose.

Why it matters๐Ÿ”—

A misspelled or misplaced marker must not silently turn a negative example into a positive one or hide a fence from checking. The scanner reads lines and a Markdown reader reads blocks, so a Lean block in a quotation, in a list item, behind a different spelling of the language or in raw HTML is rendered and not checked. Fail-closed structure keeps every documented Lean claim checked as intended.

What triggers it๐Ÿ”—

The documentation scanner classifies every Lean fence in every Markdown file of the selected tree. An unmarked lean fence is positive; an immediately adjacent <!-- lean-fail: PATTERN --> makes the next fence negative; <!-- lean-trusted-compiler --> marks a teaching example. Anything else that looks like a marker, or a structural error, is rejected with applicability fence-structure.

The pattern grammar is small: | separates alternatives, .* separates ordered literal fragments, and an optional leading (?s) is accepted for compatibility; other regex syntax is rejected.

The shape rule: a line that has, at any place, a run of three or more back-ticks or tildes that the language of Lean follows must open a lean fence in the first column, outside any fence, and a Lean fence must close with a run in the first column. The characters after the run name Lean when their first run of letters is lean, without regard to case (Lean, lean4, {.lean}, and lean after a form feed or a no-break space, which some Markdown readers remove). A & or a backslash in the first word after the run gives the line that shape too: Markdown decodes them in an info string, and a reader takes the first word as the language. That word starts at the first letter, & or backslash after the run and ends at a space. Only the word lean opens a Lean fence.

The shape is conservative. It does not read the inline structure of Markdown, so it refuses a line of text with an inline span of three back-ticks that the word lean follows. Two refused lines are See, then the span, then lean examples., and See, then the span, then lean/Regula., where the span is the letter x between two runs of three back-ticks. Use an inline span with fewer back-ticks, or different words.

A line of a Markdown document with the start tag of pre, code, xmp, listing or plaintext is rejected at each place, also inside a fence: the character <, the name without regard to case, then the end of the line, >, / or a character that HTML takes as white space (a space, a tab, a form feed, a carriage return).

A line ends at a line feed, with or without a carriage return before it. A carriage return that no line feed follows is rejected in a Markdown document, because a Markdown reader takes it as the end of a line. The character U+0000 is rejected, because a Markdown reader shows U+FFFD in its place; write \x00 in a Lean literal. A Verso source has neither character.

What a passing result establishes๐Ÿ”—

Every Lean fence in the checked tree has exactly one valid classification.

Each line that a Markdown reader can take as the opening line of a Lean block is the opening line of a fence that the audit checks, and that fence closes where the reader closes it.

An accepted Markdown document has no start tag of an element that a browser shows as preformatted text or code: pre, code, xmp, listing, plaintext.

It does not establish:

 • That the prose around a fence describes it faithfully (R-DOC).

 • That a Markdown reader follows CommonMark for the end of a line and for the opening line and the closing line of a fenced block: the second item above rests on reading its sections on line endings, fenced code blocks and container blocks.

 • That Lean reads a carriage return before a line feed as a line feed. The body that the audit compiles keeps the carriage returns of its line endings, without the line ending of its last line, and the front end of the compiler (Lean.Parser.mkInputContext) is trusted for them.

It leaves these review obligations open: R-QUALIFY, R-DOC.

Configuration and exceptions๐Ÿ”—

The checked tree is the documentation tree the audit selects (docs/ for lake exe docFenceAudit). There is no per-fence opt-out.

This rule is a documentation-mode rule; it is not reported by the per-declaration editor linter.

Limitations and unsupported cases๐Ÿ”—

Only Markdown structure is checked here; elaboration results belong to RG4002โ€“RG4004.

A sample of a Lean fence inside a longer fence is refused, with no exception: show the fence as a real example, and describe a marker in prose.

A sample of a raw HTML code tag is written with a character reference (<pre>) or in prose, also inside a fence.

An accepted run satisfies RegulaPolicy.DocumentOK. The scanners report no violation exactly for a document with lines that are permitted transitions of the fence protocol and keep the shape rule (Regula.Checker.Documentation.checked_scanLines, checked_scanVersoLines), and the lines are those of the text of the document (toList_linesOf). A clean document has a returned fence for each line of Lean shape (fence_of_leanShaped, example_of_leanShaped), and a Markdown document is clean exactly when its lines without the carriage return of a line ending have no carriage return left and are clean (clean_iff_withoutReturn). The body and the byte ranges of a returned fence are not proved.
